Exhaust snapped at the turbo. Advice needed.
« on: January 30, 2017, 05:06:07 pm »
Hi guys,

I was driving down a dual carriage way yesterday and as I accelerated I heard a loud pop and the engine sounded like a Harley Davidson motorbike! Got it to a garage and they said the exhaust has snapped clean off at the place it joins the turbo. They said it's weldable as it's a clean snap but he said they can't weld it in place because of where it is and have to take the whole exhaust out.

I was quoted £120 and I wondered does this sound about right? I have never had any welding done before so I'm not sure if I'm being ripped off.

Thanks
Craigh

Sorry to hear mate

Is it a standard exhaust system? If so then I'll say just change it instead of repairing, a second hand one is pretty easy and cheap to pick up

Its 4 bolts holding it on how the hell did it come off.  I wouldn't weld it if it was mine.

I have posted a pic of the part it has sheared off at. It's sheared off just after where the bolts are. The pic is a miltek but my exhaust is standard apart from the middle and back section which was a custom stainless steel one.

What is the section of exhaust called where mine has snapped? I don't know what to search for on eBay.

See it happen before.

You need a downpipe. The bulky bit is the pre-cat

The problem is trying to find one in the Leicester area and I need one pretty quick.
What causes it to shear off like that??

If I did choose to have that part welded should it be ok? And does the price seem about right?

I have a standard down pipe in the shed you can buy from me, was looking to hold onto it if I ever went back to standard but I guess I can just find another one.

I'm in Leeds, could deliver for a bit extra. Ranging from £50 upwards on eBay.

With the amount of spares available it's cheaper to replace. But £120 seems steep if labour is about £35 an hour now, doesn't take 3 and a half hours to remove an exhaust and put a weld on it.

The problem is trying to find one in my area and I can't have my car off the road for too long :-/ I did think the price was a bit steep because when I asked him over the phone for a rough idea he said around £40 depending on if they can weld it without taking the exhaust off. But when he looked he said oh it's a big job as they have to take the whole exhaust off and it will be £120!

Thinking of ringing round a few other places now :/

Only the downpipe will need taking off, not the whole exhaust.
